Understanding Drug Half-Life

What is Half-Life?

The elimination half-life of a drug is the time required for the concentration of that drug in the body to be reduced by one-half (50%). For example, if you take 100mg of a medication with a half-life of 4 hours, only 50mg remains after 4 hours, and 25mg remains after 8 hours.

The Formula

Remaining = Initial Dosage × (0.5) ^ (Time Elapsed / Half-Life)

Why Calculate This?

  • Drug Testing: Estimate when a substance might be cleared from your system for sports or employment screenings.
  • Breastfeeding Safety: Determine safer windows for breastfeeding after taking medication (pump and dump timing).
  • Caffeine Management: Calculate how much coffee is still in your system at bedtime.
  • Avoiding Overdose: Understand accumulation risks with repeated doses.

This Drug Half-Life Calculator provides estimates based on a simplified linear mathematical model. Actual drug elimination varies significantly based on metabolism, liver/kidney function, age, weight, genetics, and drug interactions.
