Understanding Camera FOV and DoF

The Field of View (FOV) is determined by the combination of the lens and the sensor, while the Depth of Field (DoF) is determined by adding aperture and shooting distance. Both play a crucial role in the composition and expression of photos and videos.

🧮 FOV Determining Factors

  • Focal Length: Shorter means wide-angle, longer means telephoto. (FOV change)
  • Sensor Size: Larger sensor results in a wider FOV with the same lens. (Crop factor)

🔍 DoF Determining Factors

  • Aperture (F-Stop): Stopping down (higher F-number) increases DoF.
  • Subject Distance: Greater distance increases DoF.
  • Focal Length: Longer focal length decreases DoF.

Tip: By focusing at the Hyperfocal Distance, everything from half that distance to infinity will be in acceptable focus, which is ideal for landscape photography.
