Detailed brain structure analysis

A stroke, often referred to as a "brain attack," is a leading cause of death and serious long-term disability worldwide. It occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot (Ischemic stroke) or bursts (Hemorrhagic stroke). When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, so it and brain cells die. Knowing the FAST Rule can mean the difference between recovery and permanent damage.

What is a Stroke?

The brain is the control center for your entire body. When brain cells die during a stroke, abilities controlled by that area of the brain—such as memory and muscle control—are lost. Because dead brain cells do not regenerate easily, Time is the most critical factor in treatment.

"Time is Brain. Every minute a stroke goes untreated, the average person loses 1.9 million brain cells."

The Life-Saving FAST Rule

The American Stroke Association and medical professionals globally emphasize the FAST Rule as the easiest way to recognize and respond to a stroke.

1. Face Drooping

Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Is the person's smile uneven or lopsided? Facial asymmetry is one of the most common early signs of a stroke.

2. Arm Weakness

Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? Hemiparesis, or weakness on one side of the body, is a classic indicator of neurological distress.

3. Speech Difficulty

Is speech slurred? Is the person unable to speak or hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence like "The sky is blue." Is the sentence repeated correctly? Aphasia or dysarthria are major warning signs.

4. Time to Call 911

If the person shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 911 immediately and get them to the hospital. Note the time when the first symptoms appeared. This information is vital for the medical team. The Golden Hour for treatment is typically within 3 to 4.5 hours of onset.

Other Signs: BE-FAST

Beyond FAST, modern medicine often adds two more letters to create BE-FAST for a more comprehensive check.

  • ⚖️
Balance: Sudden loss of balance or coordination, dizziness, or trouble walking.
  • 👁️
Eyes: Sudden vision changes, such as double vision or loss of vision in one or both eyes.
  • ⚡
Headache: A sudden, severe headache with no known cause (often described as the "worst headache of your life").

Stroke Prevention Guidelines

Up to 80% of strokes are preventable through healthy lifestyle choices and managing risk factors.

1. Manage Blood Pressure & Cholesterol

High blood pressure is the leading cause of stroke. Know your numbers and work with your doctor to keep them in a healthy range.

2. Quit Smoking

Smoking doubles the risk of ischemic stroke. Quitting significantly reduces your risk within just a few years.

3. Healthy Diet (Lower Sodium)

Reduce salt intake and eat more fruits, vegetables, and fiber. A heart-healthy diet is a brain-healthy diet.

4. Stay Physically Active

Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week to maintain a healthy weight and circulation.

What NOT to Do During a Stroke

Incorrect actions can worsen the patient's condition. Follow these precautions:

  • • Do NOT give the person Aspirin: If the stroke is hemorrhagic (bleeding), aspirin can make it much worse. Only a hospital can determine the type of stroke.
  • • Do NOT give food or water: A stroke often affects swallowing. Giving them anything by mouth can cause choking or aspiration pneumonia.
  • • Do NOT wait: Even if symptoms seem to improve, the underlying issue remains. "Wait and see" is dangerous.
  • • Do NOT drive yourself: EMTs can start life-saving treatment on the way to the hospital. Calling 911 is always the fastest route to care.

Closing: Awareness Saves Lives

A stroke can happen to anyone at any time. Remembering Face, Arm, Speech, and Time is the best tool we have to fight back. Ensure everyone in your family knows these signs.
